Dr. Phil McGraw took the stage at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Madison Square Garden, delivering remarks that have sparked national controversy. Addressing thousands of Trump supporters, McGraw argued that America’s foundation lies in “hard work” and not in the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The well-known TV personality received swift backlash, with critics claiming his remarks dismiss the experiences and contributions of minorities.
“We didn’t choose the name [Merit Street Media] for that by random,” McGraw said, referring to his media company. “This country was built on hard work, added value, and talent—not on equal outcome, not on DEI. This country was built on hard work.”
NAACP Responds to Dr. Phil: “Tell the WHOLE Story”
The NAACP quickly responded to Dr. Phil’s comments, taking issue with what it saw as an incomplete view of American history. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the organization challenged his statements by emphasizing the role minorities have played in the nation’s development. “This country was absolutely built on hard work, Dr. Phil… on the backs of Black, Brown, and immigrants from all across this WORLD!” the post read. The NAACP continued, “Many of which who were forced to do so,” referencing slavery as a significant and dark aspect of America’s labor history. “Let us know when you’re ready to tell the WHOLE story.”
Other critics also took issue with McGraw’s take on DEI, a set of principles meant to uplift historically marginalized communities. Former White House aide Keith Boykin called out McGraw and Trump, noting that their personal successes are built on privilege. “Trump inherited $400 million from his KKK daddy,” Boykin stated, adding, “and Dr. Phil became famous because a Black woman gave him a platform.” This remark highlighted Oprah Winfrey’s pivotal role in Dr. Phil’s rise to fame.
McGraw’s comments have ignited a larger debate about meritocracy in America, with many pointing out that systemic injustices have impacted access to success. Dr. Phil has yet to respond directly to the criticism, though his comments remain a hot topic in conversations about privilege and the true foundation of American society.
