The beloved musical Dreamgirls will make its long-awaited return to Broadway in the fall of 2026. Producers have announced this will be the show’s first fully new Broadway revival, with direction and choreography by Camille A. Brown, a five-time Tony Award nominee.
Brown will lead the creative team for the production, which has yet to announce its cast or theatre. The revival will feature the original score by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen.
Worldwide Casting Search for ‘The Dreams’
Producers revealed they will hold open auditions in multiple global cities to cast the trio at the heart of Dreamgirls, known as The Dreams. Auditions will take place in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, and Miami. Overseas stops will include London, Toronto, Mexico City, Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris. The call seeks “talented women of all shapes and sizes.”
Since its original Broadway premiere in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre, Dreamgirls has been considered a landmark musical. It ran until 1985, earned 13 Tony nominations, and won six trophies including Best Book of a Musical and Best Leading Actress for Jennifer Holliday. Its songs—such as “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “One Night Only”—remain some of Broadway’s most iconic numbers.
A 2016 West End revival won acclaim but never transferred to Broadway despite expectations. The 2006 film version brought the story to wider audiences, with Jennifer Hudson winning an Oscar for her performance as Effie White.
Details such as performance dates, the theater, and casting announcements will follow in the coming months. Producers say they intend the revival to honor Dreamgirls’ cultural roots while speaking to today’s audiences.
