Former NBA veteran Elden Campbell’s cause of death has been confirmed. Officials say the 57-year-old died of an accidental drowning after suffering a medical emergency while on a fishing trip in Florida.
Calm End to a Storied Life
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell collapsed shortly after returning from his fishing outing. He was pronounced dead on the evening of Dec. 1. Authorities ruled his death an accidental drowning.
His family said he had shown no prior signs of illness. His sister described his passing as sudden and shocking. “He had not been sick before this trip,” she said. “He passed doing what he loved.”
Friends and former teammates described Campbell as generous, disciplined and deeply devoted to faith and family.
Campbell rose to prominence at Clemson Tigers, where he remains the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,880 career points.
He was drafted No. 27 overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1990. Over a 15-year NBA career, Campbell played more than 1,000 games for several teams, including the Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, Seattle SuperSonics, and Detroit Pistons.
His crowning professional achievement came in 2004 — winning an NBA championship with the Pistons. That title marked the peak of a career built on consistency, strength, and a quiet work ethic.
Off the court, he was affectionately known as “Big Easy” for his calm, easy-going demeanor. Teammates and coaches often praised his steady presence and leadership.
