Kevin Hart sat down with Ellen Degeneres this morning to talk about his recent Oscars debacle, and addressed the reasons he was choosing to ignore the trolls and what caused him to ultimately back out of hosting the 2019 event.
Ellen told the audience about a conversation the two had over dinner after she hosted the Academy Awards in 2014, and reiterated what a “dream” it would be if Kevin got the gig.
“After I hosted the Oscars, we went to dinner, and talked about you hosting the Oscars. That it was a dream of yours, that you’ve always wanted to host the Oscars. I said you should host the Oscars, then you get asked — I mean, it must have been amazing when they asked you to host this year.”
As Hart speaks on the importance of what hosting the Oscars would have meant to him, the talk show host interjects and tells Kevin she spoke with the Academy earlier today on his behalf. She then shared their positive response: “We want him to host. We feel like maybe he misunderstood, or it was handled wrong, or maybe we said the wrong thing, but we want him to host. Whatever we can do, we would be thrilled.”
Immediately speaking the “dream job” back into existence, Ellen follows up by saying, “What we’re gonna get to see on stage with you hosting the Oscars is sophistication, class, hilarity, and you growing as a person.”
Hart responded to Ellen and the audience by explaining, “In this case, for me, it was an attack. It wasn’t an accident. This wasn’t a coincidence. It wasn’t a coincidence that the day after I received the job that tweets just somehow manifested from 2008. I don’t know who follows me or who doesn’t…but to go through 40,000 tweets back to 2008 — that’s an attack. That’s a malicious attack on my character. That’s an attack to end me. It’s bigger than just the Oscars.”
