At Tesla’s highly anticipated “We, Robot” event, CEO Elon Musk unveiled the latest version of the Optimus humanoid robot, showcasing its impressive capabilities. The robot, which Musk claims will “revolutionize the world,” was presented alongside Tesla’s new autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab.
Optimus Gen 2: Advancements in Robotics
The Gen 2 Optimus robot demonstrated significant improvements over its predecessors, boasting faster walking speeds, enhanced hand mobility, and advanced tactile sensors on its fingers. In a video shown during the event, the robot was seen performing everyday tasks, such as folding shirts and watering plants. Musk enthusiastically stated, “The Optimus can now do anything,” adding that it could soon be walking dogs, babysitting children, and even serving drinks. He further elaborated, “I believe this will be the most significant product ever created.”
Musk has high hopes for the robot, predicting that its long-term price will be between $20,000 and $30,000. He envisions a future where millions of these robots are produced, bringing a “two orders of magnitude” improvement in economic output. “Everyone among the 8 billion people on Earth will want an Optimus buddy,” Musk confidently predicted.
Humanoid Interaction: A Step Toward Everyday Use
During the event, guests had the opportunity to interact with the Optimus robots. While the robots primarily waved and held drinks, one demonstrated the ability to hand out gift bags and play rock-paper-scissors. Although these interactions were basic, they offered a glimpse of what Optimus could achieve as the technology continues to evolve. Musk has stated that by the end of the year, Optimus will be capable of performing “useful tasks” and could be available for sale by late 2025.
Musk’s bold vision for the Optimus robot extends beyond just household tasks. He believes it will lead to a “fundamental transformation for civilization” and even claims it could play a role in eradicating poverty.
