Bryshere Gray, known for his role as Hakeem Lyon on Empire, now faces new legal troubles. A misdemeanor count of assault and battery has been filed against the 31-year-old actor in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Allegations from a Hotel Dispute
Court records show the incident occurred on June 13, 2025, at a Homewood Suites hotel in Chesapeake. Gray allegedly engaged in a heated dispute with associate Dustin “Chosen” Wilkins. According to Wilkins, Gray “charged him from behind a vehicle” during the confrontation.
“As I was explaining to him that he can’t just leave without paying, adding ‘you have enough problems… I am trying to save your life,’ he then charged towards me from around the car. Charged into me with his shoulder… fighting me as I was recording … a blunt blow into me and punching me,” Wilkins recounted.
Virginia law allows private individuals to file misdemeanor complaints directly with a magistrate. Upon review, a warrant was issued and Gray bonded out after being taken into custody on June 15.
Mental Health Concerns Raised
Despite pressing charges, Wilkins spoke positively of Gray’s character and personal struggles:
“Something took place in a mental health aspect. I cannot disclose details… Bryshere is a friend, he’s like my brother. He is just someone who is dealing with some very interesting mental health issues,” he told 10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox.
Wilkins also expressed concern for Gray’s well‑being.
“Bryshere doesn’t need to be in jail. He wouldn’t survive in jail. He needs mental help,” he said.
Gray’s arraignment is set for Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in a Chesapeake courtroom. If convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery, he could face fines and possible jail time.
Representatives for Gray have not responded to requests for comment. His legal team may seek mental health evaluations or mitigation during proceedings.
