Eric Adams Becomes New York City’s Second Black Mayor

Congratulations are in order to the new Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams. 

Adams is the second Black man in history to become mayor of the major city. Before winning this victory, he served as the Brooklyn borough president and was declared the winner with early results from the city Board of Elections, according to The Daily News

The 61-year-old has been in the public eye and in New York politics since 2007 when he was elected to a State Senate seat to represent Brooklyn. He has also been a New York City police officer for nearly 20 years and retired as a captain in 2006.

Eric Adams won against his opponent Curtis Sliwa by 76% gaining over 220 thousand votes. While on his campaign trail, he was quoted as saying “Public safety is the prerequisite to prosperity.”
