Nia DaCosta Becomes the First Black Woman to Direct a Marvel Film, ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Nia DaCosta is shaking up the film industry as the new director of the sequel to “Captian Marvel 2” making her the Black women to ever direct a Marvel Studios movie.

Girls!⁠ ⁠ Filmmaker Nia DaCosta is slated to direct Captain Marvel 2, making history as the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios movie, Deadline reports.⁠ ⁠ DaCosta gained notoriety after directing the critically acclaimed indie film Little Woods. She was also tapped by Jordan Peele to direct his Candyman reboot, set for release next year. The up-and-coming filmmaker will start where Anna Bodn and Ryan Fleck left off. The two directors of the first Captain Marvel, which was released in March 2019, grossed $1.13 billion worldwide for their film.⁠ ⁠ The first movie centered around human Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, as she finds herself embroiled in a war between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls. When Larson’s character survives an explosion tied to an alien engine, it gives her incredible power and turns her into Captain Marvel. She becomes one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.⁠ ⁠ The sequel, written by Megan McDonnell (WandaVision), has Larson returning in her lead role. DaCosta will become just one of a few women filmmakers helming massive comic book projects, including Chloe Zhao and Cathy Yan. DaCosta will also be following in the footsteps of Ava DuVernay, securing one of the largest budgets by a Black female director. DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time rounded off at a massive $115 million budget.⁠ ⁠ Marvel has a history of switching up its directors to keep each installment fresh. Fleck congratulated DaCosta on Twitter, saying, “Can’t wait to see where you take this! Anna and I are thrilled for you and wishing you the very best! DaCosta is taking over from Anna Bodn and Ryan Fleck, who were the directors of the first installment of the box-office film. It comes as Marvel changes its directors in the sequel of movies such as Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America in hopes to give it a fresh take.

Fleck took to Twitter to congratulate DaCosta:

DaCosta is known for her directorial debut in “Little Woods” along with “Candyman.”

Captain Marvel is set to be released in 2022.
