Gonzalez has made history by becoming the first Hispanic to be elected District Attorney in the state of Georgia. This isn’t the only first that she has accomplished.

According to NBC News, Gonzalez is also the first woman to serve as a district attorney in the circuit and the first Puerto Rican woman in the country to be elected a district attorney. Gonzalez, a Democrat, is a former state representative of Georgia House District 117.

She defeated her opponent, James Chafin by almost double the votes in Clarke County, Georgia. Gonzalez spoke of her victory, saying, “We did this together. This is the people’s vote. We are ready to roll up our sleeves, work really hard to bring justice to Athens and Oconee.”
