Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks have garnered their first Golden Globe nominations.

It appears reprising their roles from the musical adaptation of The Color Purple has paid off. Barrino, who plays Celie, was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. “Orange Is The New Black” star, Brooks, scored a Supporting Actress nomination.

Adapted from Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller, The Color Purple follows the inspirational Celie as she journeys from childhood through joy and despair, anguish and hope, to discover the power of love and life.

According to Deadline, Fantasia revealed that she almost turned down the offer to play Celie because of the PTSD she previously experienced.

“I’ve said in Interviews before that I would never play this role again because of post-traumatic stress, but I am so glad that I didn’t allow fear to stand in my way,” she said after this morning’s nominations were revealed.

Barrino and Brooks star alongside Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, H.E.R, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr, David Alan Grier and others.

Other Black nominees include Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers); TV comedy lead actresses Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), Lawmen: Bass Reeves star David Oyelowo; and stand-up comics Trevor Noah, Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes.

The film debuts in theaters on December 25.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
