The expansive “Power” universe continues to thrive as Starz announces the development of yet another gripping spinoff series. Titled “Origins,” this new installment is set to delve into the origins of two iconic characters from the original series, James “Ghost” St. Patrick and Tommy Egan, portrayed by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora, respectively.
“Sascha Penn (“Power Book III: Raising Kanan”) will serve as the executive producer for ‘Origins,’ which comes from Lionsgate TV,” confirmed the network. While it’s uncertain if it will carry the moniker “Power Book V: Origins,” the series is set to explore the early lives and experiences of Ghost and Tommy, shedding light on their journey to becoming the formidable figures fans came to know in the original “Power.”
The announcement of “Origins” comes amidst the ongoing success of the “Power” universe, with “Power Book II: Ghost” gearing up for its highly-anticipated fourth season later this year. Meanwhile, “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” is currently in production for its fourth season in New York, and “Power Book IV: Force” is underway with its third season shoot in Chicago.
Reflecting on the enduring popularity of the franchise, Kathryn Busby, Starz programming president, remarked, “As we approach the 10-year anniversary of Power, it is incredible to witness the enormous connection our fans have with the Power universe. We can’t wait to see how ‘Origins’ will further evolve this dynamic franchise while bringing fresh, gripping, and expansive storytelling to our audience.”
The “Power” series universe boasts executive producers including original “Power” creator and showrunner, Courtney A. Kemp, through her production company End of Episode; Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson via G-Unit Film and Television; and Mark Canton through Canton Entertainment.
In discussing the characters’ backgrounds, Omari Hardwick shared insights into Ghost’s upbringing, highlighting his empathetic nature amidst a challenging environment. “He grew up with no mom… The only family we know of Ghost is the one he made with Tasha,” Hardwick explained, offering a glimpse into Ghost’s relentless pursuit of self-discovery.
Joseph Sikora, discussing Tommy Egan’s emotional complexities, pointed to the character’s quest for love and belonging, rooted in his tumultuous childhood. “Tommy Egan’s legacy is that there’s humanity in everyone. That everybody needs love,” Sikora elaborated, hinting at the profound themes that “Origins” may explore.
While the cast for “Origins” is yet to be announced, fans are already expressing hopes for Hardwick and Sikora to reprise their roles as narrators, akin to 50 Cent’s involvement in “Raising Kanan.” Sikora has shown enthusiasm for the idea, indicating a potential continuation of the tradition in the upcoming series.
