In a heartfelt moment on the Drink Champs podcast, actress Gabrielle Union revealed how friend and fellow actor Tisha Campbell gave her a lifeline during a pivotal time.
A Lifesaving Gift
Union reflected on the moment Campell “really saw me struggling” in her late 20s. She recalled how Campbell quietly offered her a precious gift: professional therapy funded out of kindness. Union described it as “the single greatest gift anyone had ever given me,” adding that she still works with that same therapist today.
Campbell, in her own words on The View, said: “I want you to have it… I want you to win. I want my sisters to win.” She explained she saw Union’s hardship and wanted to support her before fame “monsters” could take control.
Support Within Black Hollywood
During the Drink Champs interview, Union emphasized how rare and meaningful such support is within the Black entertainment community. She spoke of their connection, saying: “It was a moment in time for us,” one that has echoed throughout her adult life.
Union continued, “I really wanted her to be okay,” referencing Campbell’s motivation. She acknowledged how easy it can be, amid early success, to lose sight of one’s self. This act of altruism from Campbell remains central to Union’s healing journey.
Union has been open about her struggles in her 20s, calling that era “darkness” heaped with identity and career challenges. Through therapy, she found healing. She has said she is “proud” of her perseverance. Now, she credits Campbell with giving her the tools to stay grounded and resilient amid Hollywood’s pressures.
