Gladys Knight addressed her global fanbase Wednesday to express gratitude for their support following a series of public allegations concerning her cognitive health and rigorous touring schedule.

The 82-year-old singer, known as the “Empress of Soul,” took to social media to reassure the public after her son and fellow performers voiced worries regarding her current well-being. “To the true fans… THANK YOU… your love, kind words, prayers, support and well wishes are deeply appreciated,” Knight wrote in an emotional message on Threads.

She added that she feels blessed to continue sharing her music with people who cherish her work. The singer’s statement follows recent comments from R&B star Stephanie Mills, who recently toured with Knight. Mills claimed that the Grammy-winning artist appeared confused while performing onstage and suggested that Knight might be showing early signs of dementia. These observations sparked a heated debate regarding whether the veteran performer should remain on the road.

Family tensions have also surfaced publicly. Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, previously accused his mother’s husband and manager, William McDowell, of overworking her. Hankerson alleged that McDowell is pushing the octogenarian to maintain a demanding performance schedule despite potential health concerns.

McDowell has denied the accusations, maintaining that his wife is not being forced to perform against her will. He further clarified that Knight has not received a formal diagnosis of dementia, contradicting the speculation raised by Mills and other observers. Knight, whose career spans seven decades, has remained a fixture on the touring circuit.

While her team insists she performs out of a love for her craft, the conflicting reports from her inner circle have left many fans concerned about the balance between her legacy and her health. In her message to fans, Knight did not explicitly name her son or Mills but focused instead on the positivity of her supporters.

She concluded her post by telling her followers, “I love you all!” as she continues to navigate the scrutiny surrounding her legendary career.
