Vice President Kamala Harris, President of the Senate, was tasked with swearing in the newly-elected U.S. senators on Friday (Jan. 3). One moment from the day-long ceremony, has gone viral showing an awkward exchange.
In a clip, the husband of a Republican Sen. Deb Fischer can be seen refusing to shake the hand of Vice President Kamala Harris during the ceremony.
Sen. Deb Fischer appeared to be all smiles while being sworn in by Harris for her third term in the U.S. Senate while standing alongside her husband, Bruce Fischer. He, not only refused to shake Harris’ hand but avoided making eye contact with her as well.
Harris was seemingly surprised by the snub but reacted lightly, smiling and saying OK. “It’s OK, I won’t bite… don’t worry,” Harris said in response to Mr. Fischer’s apparent reluctance to even stand close to her.

“@SenatorFischer’s a—hole husband, Bruce, wouldn’t even look her in the eye. In the FULL video, he didn’t even want to stand next to her! Stop making excuses. He QUICKLY put his hand in his pocket so as not to touch her,” radio host Roland Martin wrote on X.
“Bruce Fischer is exactly what is wrong with American culture right now. We have put civility on the shelf. You can’t shake the Vice President’s hand while your wife, who is a UNITED STATES SENATOR, is sworn in? @SenatorFischer should be embarrassed by this,” one user wrote.

“It’s disgraceful that Bruce Fischer, husband to incoming GOP Senator Deb Fischer cannot muster a few seconds of class to shake the hands of @VPKamala Harris. States. IMO, only thing Bruce showed here was that pigs don’t only live on farms. He is a pig,” author Don Wislow wrote.
