A grand jury has decided to not prosecute Carolyn Bryant for her role in the death of Emmett Till.
Reports state that Dewayne Richardson, Leflore County District Attorney, believes that the unserved 1955 warrant or the new memoir that speaks on what led to Till’s death were enough for Bryant to be charged with kidnapping and manslaughter.
After hours of testimony were presented to the courts from investigators and witnesses, the Leflore County grand jury determined that there was insufficient evidence to reopen the case.
Till’s last living relative and the witness to his abduction, Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr. did not blame the prosecutor for their decision.
“The prosecutor tried his best, and we appreciate his efforts, but he alone cannot undo hundreds of years of anti-Black systems that guaranteed those who killed Emmett Till would go unpunished, to this day,” he said in a statement.
Parker continued, “That fact remains that the people who abducted, tortured, and murdered Emmett did so in plain sight, and our American justice system was and continues to be set up in such a way that they could not be brought to justice for their heinous crimes.”
