Multiple HBCUs were forced into lockdown after receiving racist and “terroristic threats.”
According to USA News, Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Southern University and A&M College, and Bethune-Cookman University were locked down the on Thursday. Each institution cited “potential threats made against the campuses.” Southern University’s lockdown was eventually lifted, “but all campus activities and classes were cancelled through the weekend”, school officials announced on social media.

Additionally Spelman College in Atlanta also requested that students and faculty to avoid campus because of a threat against nearby Clark Atlanta University. Eventually, a shelter-in-place order was later lifted.
Alabama State University said that the school was the target of “terroristic threats.”
“We are working in close coordination with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to assess the situation. And to ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader ASU community,” the statement said.
Due to the threats, Hampton University and Florida A&M cancelled classed on September 11 and 12.
The latest threats follows a series of threats that targeted numerous HBCUs in 2022. Several schools were the subject of terroristic threats that sent shockwaves throught the campuses.
In a statment, Rev. Al Sharpton denounced the violent threats on HBCUs and other college campues.
Sharpton said in a statement: “We have seen too much violence on our campuses. Whether it was the brazen murder of Charlie Kirk yesterday or the threats against these HBCUs today. “Colleges and Universities should be a place of free expression and debate in a way that’s respectful, engaging, and productive. What we have seen the last two days is anything but that.”
