Idris Elba, the British actor known for his commanding screen presence in Luther and Beasts of No Nation, said he plans to eventually step back from acting. The 53-year-old spoke candidly about moving toward a career behind the camera during a public appearance this week.

Elba made the remarks on Dec. 10 at the Red Sea International Film Festival. He was promoting his new short film Dust to Dreams, which he directed. The actor, whose career spans more than three decades, said his creative priorities are changing.

“I’ve been acting for a long time. I love it still,” Elba said during a Q&A session. “But eventually I want to transfer to be a director fully.”

Elba noted that directing gives him fresh challenges. He said the role lets him engage with productions in a different way than acting does.

“Directing allows me to flex slightly different muscles and just be a part of the set in a different way,” he said. “I really enjoy it.”

The Luther star first directed a feature film in 2018 with Yardie, a crime drama inspired by Jamaican culture. His work on Dust to Dreams marks his second notable turn behind the camera.

A Shift Toward Creative Control

Elba stressed that his feelings about acting are not negative. At the festival, he reiterated his affection for the craft that made him a household name.

“I’m hoping that my fan base as an actor isn’t mad at me,” he said with a smile. “Acting has been a privilege.”

Despite acknowledging that his acting days may be numbered, Elba confirmed he still has work ahead of him on screen. Plans are underway for a second Luther film, scheduled to begin production early next year.

He also addressed persistent rumors linking him to the James Bond franchise. Though he did not dismiss the idea outright, Elba clarified that his future focus is broader than one role.

Elba’s interest in directing is part of a wider creative vision. He discussed how behind-the-camera work allows him to explore storytelling from fresh angles.

“You get to shape a story in a way that acting doesn’t always allow,” he said. “That’s exciting to me.”

Industry observers say Elba’s transition mirrors a growing trend among established actors who seek greater control over content. His remarks sparked discussion among festival attendees about the evolving role of performers in global cinema.
