This is great! An Indiana school district will launch a program that will allow schools to package unused cafeteria food. The students will be able to bring this food home on the weekend. The initiative was launched so that students don’t go hungry. We know students are served school lunch during the school week, but how can we ensure they’re eating during the weekend?
The food will be provided from schools cafeteria as well as catering companies. The district is collaborating with nonprofit Cultivate Culinary school. 20 students will be able to bring eight meals home every Friday, which in hopes will last them through the weekend.
Cultivate’s Jim Conklin explained to local news station, “Mostly, we rescue food that’s been made but never served by catering companies, large food service businesses, like the school system. Over-preparing is just part of what happens. We take well-prepared food, combine it with other food and make individual frozen meals out if it.”
Thank you to @CBSNews for highlighting this great program on a national level! We are thrilled to collaborate with Cultivate to bring this program to Elkhart Community Schools! https://t.co/gm13Dd4BwT
