TriStar Pictures has confirmed that a sequel to the hit comedy One of Them Days is in early development. The original film, produced by Issa Rae, starred Keke Palmer and SZA as best friends navigating a chaotic day in South Los Angeles. Both actresses are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel.
The 2025 film, directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, was both a critical and commercial success. It grossed over $51 million worldwide on a $14 million budget and spent three weeks in Netflix’s top 10 after its streaming release. The story followed Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) as they scrambled to recover their rent money after Alyssa’s boyfriend misused it.
SZA, who made her acting debut in the film, expressed enthusiasm about returning to the screen, stating she would continue acting “under this one condition”—that Keke Palmer is involved. Palmer praised SZA’s natural talent, noting her seamless transition from music to acting.
Issa Rae emphasized the importance of authentic storytelling, saying, “You just know these people. It was important to us to weave elements of who Keke and SZA are into their characters, making them authentic and whole.” She also highlighted the film’s role in showcasing Black female friendships on screen.
The original film paid homage to ’90s Black cinema, drawing inspiration from classics like Friday. Director Lawrence Lamont aimed to capture the essence of South Central Los Angeles, stating his goal was to keep the “essence of L.A. alive” while ensuring the story’s universality.
While details about the sequel’s plot remain under wraps, the original creative team is expected to return. Fans can look forward to another installment that continues to celebrate Black female friendship and community.
One of Them Days is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
