Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts sidestepped a question about attending the team’s upcoming White House visit, raising eyebrows and prompting speculation. The incident occurred during the TIME100 Gala, where Hurts was honored as one of the world’s most influential people.

When a TIME reporter inquired, “Are you planning on visiting the White House next week?” Hurts hesitated, responding with a prolonged “Umm…” before averting his gaze and remaining silent. The reporter concluded the interaction, saying, “Got it. Thank you so much,” as Hurts ended the interview.

The Eagles are slated to visit the White House on April 28 to celebrate their Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the visit, stating, “We sent the invite, and they enthusiastically accepted.”

Hurts’ reluctance to confirm his attendance has reignited discussions about the intersection of sports and politics. In 2018, the Eagles’ previous Super Bowl win was marred by controversy when several players declined the White House invitation, leading President Trump to rescind it.

While Hurts has not publicly endorsed any political figures, he has expressed admiration for former President Barack Obama, with whom he shared a golf outing and described as a “great leader.”

As the April 28 visit approaches, all eyes will be on Hurts to see whether he joins his teammates in Washington, D.C., or chooses to abstain, continuing the complex narrative of athletes navigating political landscapes.
