Janelle Monae has been flying high all year. Now she’s ready to “Float”.
Her new single, “Float” features Fela Kuti’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, and his band, Egypt 80.
The four-minute track is a self-assuring bop that encourages listeners to feel good about themselves. Monae noted on her Instagram post, “I pray you hold these words close to your heart cause they came straight from mine.”
The eight time Grammy nominee switches in between singing and rapping, “I think I done changed / See something not the same / I used to walk into the room, head down / I don’t walk now, I Float.”
“Float” is the first independent track from Monae since 2018 album, Dirty Computer. In 2021, she joined a slew of singers for “Say Her Name (Hell You Talmbout)” and “Stronger” for the Netflix animated series “We The People”.
The Tightrope star promoted the new single at the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. She paired her custom MSCHF boots with with a “Float” varsity jacket.
