Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has joined a coalition of Democrats who have sponsored the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act of 2025, a bill that guarantees continued food assistance for millions of Americans during the ongoing government shutdown.
Per a press release, roughly 42 million Americans—including over 3.5 million Texans—are going without their November SNAP benefits because of the administration’s deliberate refusal to release already-approved funding. Another 6.7 million mothers, infants, and children risk losing access to WIC, which provides critical nutrition support for growing families.
“No president should be able to hold hungry families hostage because they want to play political games,” said Rep. Crockett. “In Texas, we’re talking about parents skipping meals so their kids can eat and seniors rationing groceries because their benefits haven’t come in. It’s shameful, and it’s preventable. The Trump administration’s cruelty knows no bounds. It’s one thing to spar with your political opponents—but starving children, seniors, and families to make a point? That’s negligence. I’m proud to join Congresswoman Hayes in prohibiting this administration from playing politics with people’s lives by requiring them to release the funds now.”
Texas SNAP Recipients
In Texas, 3.5 million Texans — including 1.7 million children — rely on SNAP, also referred to as food stamps, each month. At the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas, volunteers say the impact is immediate and visceral.
“We’re seeing working parents who’ve never needed help before,” said operations manager Tamika Ross. “They’re not looking for handouts — they just need what they were promised.”
Running for U.S Senate
The 44-year-old has left her supporters wondering if she’ll run for U.S Senate after Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn leaves his seat.
Backstage at a Monday night fundraiser organized by Dallas Democrats, Crockett told political blogger Howdy Politics she will make a decision by Thanksgiving. Her formal announcement, whatever that may be, will follow on Dec. 8.
“No one else will know until Dec. 8, but I will know,” Crockett said. “I’ve given myself until the week of Thanksgiving.”
Crockett cited polling that shows her running highly competitive in the Democratic primary. “Every other day there’s a poll that comes out that makes it clear that I can win the primary for the U.S. Senate race in Texas,” she said.
