Jay-Z is inviting fans into one of the most introspective conversations of his career.
HBO released the first teaser Thursday for JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part documentary series featuring extended conversations between the rap icon and legendary producer Rick Rubin. The series is scheduled to premiere this fall. It will examine Jay-Z’s music, lyrics, creative process and personal journey through candid discussions.
The black-and-white teaser centers on a conversation about adversity and artistic expression. Rather than presenting pain as a requirement for success, Jay-Z explains how difficult experiences can become meaningful creative tools.
“The pain, you don’t say it’s necessary, you don’t say you need it, but if it’s there, you use it,” Jay-Z says in the preview.
Rubin responds by highlighting how those experiences shaped the rapper’s work.
“Without the pain, you wouldn’t have done the work,” Rubin says.
The exchange sets the tone for a documentary that appears less interested in celebrity than self-examination. The teaser offers only brief glimpses of the conversations. Still, it suggests viewers can expect thoughtful discussions instead of a traditional career retrospective.
Looking Back at a Landmark Career
The project arrives during a milestone year for Jay-Z. Thursday also marked the 30th anniversary of his landmark debut album, Reasonable Doubt, which helped establish him as one of hip-hop’s defining storytellers. HBO announced the series alongside celebrations honoring that achievement, including major concert performances revisiting different eras of his catalog.
The documentary also reunites Jay-Z with Rubin, whose musical partnership stretches back more than two decades. Rubin famously produced “99 Problems,” one of the signature records from 2003’s The Black Album. Although their studio collaborations have been limited, the producer has remained closely associated with Jay-Z’s artistic evolution.
Rubin previously directed the acclaimed music documentary series McCartney 3,2,1, which featured intimate conversations with Paul McCartney. That minimalist interview format appears to influence JAŸ-Z IN 8, allowing lengthy discussions to guide each episode instead of relying heavily on archival footage or celebrity commentary.
A Rare Window Into Jay-Z’s Creative Process
The teaser also includes another reflective observation from Jay-Z that underscores the documentary’s broader direction.
“Everyone had the same experience, except I was the one that could stand on the soapbox and articulate what we were going through,” he says.
That statement reflects a recurring theme throughout his career. His lyrics have often blended autobiographical storytelling with broader commentary about ambition, survival and economic inequality. The documentary appears poised to unpack how those experiences informed albums spanning from Reasonable Doubt to 4:44.
Beyond the conversations themselves, the project carries an impressive creative team. Rubin directs and serves as an executive producer. Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, also executive produces the series alongside Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya. Producers include Leila Mattimore and David Rohde.
The teaser offers few details about individual episodes. However, its restrained presentation suggests the series will emphasize reflection over spectacle. For an artist who rarely grants lengthy interviews, JAŸ-Z IN 8 promises one of the most comprehensive examinations of his life and artistry in years.
HBO has not announced a specific premiere date beyond a fall 2026 release window.
