Award-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson says inspiration for her next chapter in music is coming from close to home.

The EGOT winner recently shared that her boyfriend, rapper and actor Common, and her teenage son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., have sparked new creativity as she prepares new material and live performances. Hudson said the musical influence from both men has pushed her artistry in unexpected directions.

Hudson, 44, has long balanced a career spanning music, film and television. Yet she said her current creative period feels especially personal. Being surrounded by musical energy at home has helped shape the sound of what may become her next songs.

“My voice is a tree of many branches,” Hudson explained in a recent interview. “I am a music lover, as well as a singer and artist, so it’s going to display all of that.”

She added that fans may hear fresh material soon.

Creative Inspiration at Home

Hudson said her 16-year-old son has shown growing interest in music production. She revealed that he has even experimented with reworking some of her existing songs.

“My son is also a producer, and he’s been recreating some of my songs, so I’m inspired by that,” she said.

David, whom Hudson shares with her former fiancé David Otunga, has occasionally appeared alongside his mother in musical moments. The pair previously recorded together in the studio and have shared clips of their sessions on social media.

Hudson has often spoken about the bond she shares with her son through music. She once described recording with him as one of the most rewarding experiences of her career.

“The best part of singing is singing with my son,” Hudson said in a previous post reflecting on their studio time together.

Seeing David develop his own creative voice has become a powerful motivator for the singer. She said watching him experiment with beats and production ideas brings fresh energy to her own songwriting.

The Influence of Common

Hudson also credited her partner, Grammy-winning rapper and actor Common, as a major creative influence.

The couple first sparked romance rumors in 2022 after working together on the film Breathe. Their relationship became public in 2024 and has continued to grow both personally and creatively.

Hudson said spending time with Common and her son together often creates an atmosphere filled with music and artistic conversation.

“And then of course, the man Common — being around them both, they are so musical,” Hudson said. “It’s inspired me in so many unique ways. So that’s bringing out my artistry.”

The singer hinted that this renewed inspiration may appear in upcoming recordings or live performances. Hudson is also preparing to hit the road for a North American tour, where fans may hear elements of her evolving sound.

For Hudson, the creative process remains rooted in family and collaboration.

Surrounded by two people who share her passion for music, she said the inspiration feels both natural and exciting. As she continues to develop new songs, Hudson suggests that the voices shaping her next era may come from the very people closest to her.
