Julia Roberts opens up about her connection to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family.
During a recent interview with Gayle King, the actress recalled the time when the King family helped her family pay for a hospital bill after she was born. “The King family paid for my hospital bill… Martin Luther King and Coretta. They helped us out of a jam.”
Roberts went on to share how both of the families became acquainted after the King kids were accepted in her parents’ acting school during a time when segregation was very prevalent. “One day Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school. Cause they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept her kids, and my mom was like ‘sure come on over,’” she said.
Gayle King went on to praise Roberts’ parents for what they did for the King family. “In the 60s you didn’t have little Black children interacting with little white kids in an acting school. Your parents were like ‘come on in.’ I think that’s extraordinary and it sort of lays the groundwork for who you are.”
