Vice President Kamala Harris’ memoir, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, has surged to the top of Amazon’s bestseller lists. This comes in the wake of her campaign launch for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
Harris’ 2019 memoir currently holds the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s Biographies of Politicians and Women’s Biographies bestseller charts. The renewed interest follows President Joe Biden’s July 21 decision to suspend his re-election campaign and endorse Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. Harris expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee.”
In her memoir, Harris shares her journey from a prosecutor to California’s Attorney General and then to a U.S. Senator. The book highlights her holistic, data-driven approach to tackling major issues, including health care, immigration, national security, and the opioid crisis. Harris emphasizes her philosophy: “Neither ‘tough nor soft’ but ‘smart on crime.’”
Kamala Harris’ Campaign Boost
The official launch of Harris’ campaign came after Biden stepped down under pressure from party leaders. Harris, now the leading Democratic nominee, is set to formally secure the nomination at the Democratic convention in Chicago on August 19. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Harris stated.
Her campaign announcement has propelled The Truths We Hold to bestseller status, echoing a long-standing trend of political figures’ memoirs gaining popularity during their campaigns. This memoir was initially published ahead of the 2020 Biden-Harris ticket and is now resonating with a new wave of readers.
Harris also has other publications to her name, including Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer, which is currently the No. 1 bestseller on Amazon’s Criminology list. Additionally, she has authored a children’s book, Superheroes Are Everywhere, and a young reader’s edition of The Truths We Hold.
