Facing mounting restrictions across Europe, Kanye West is pressing forward with an ambitious plan. The rapper is building a temporary 60,000-seat stadium in Albania for a major summer performance.
The project comes after several European countries blocked or canceled his concerts. Those decisions followed controversy tied to his past antisemitic remarks.
Albanian officials confirmed the concert will take place July 11 near the Tirana-Durrës corridor. The venue, dubbed “Eagle Stadium,” is being constructed specifically for the event.
Government leaders in Albania have embraced the concert despite criticism elsewhere. Prime Minister Edi Rama publicly supported the show, signaling confidence in its tourism impact.
Europe Pushback Intensifies
West’s Albania performance follows weeks of cancellations across Europe. Countries including the United Kingdom, France, Poland, and Switzerland halted planned appearances.
Officials cited concerns over public safety and backlash tied to the artist’s past statements. In France, authorities considered blocking a show before West postponed it himself.
A European lawmaker recently urged countries to take a firmer stance. “The United Kingdom denied the visa,” the official said, noting others had also withdrawn support.
The cancellations have disrupted what was intended as a large-scale international tour. Industry analysts say the setbacks could reshape how major artists plan global events.
Albania Sees Opportunity
Despite controversy, Albania views the concert as a potential economic boost. Tourism officials expect a surge of visitors for what could become one of the country’s largest music events.
Local organizers say the temporary stadium will meet international standards. They believe the event could place Albania on the global entertainment map.
West, who has apologized for his past remarks, said earlier this year he was “deeply mortified by [his] actions.”
Still, criticism has not fully subsided. Sponsors and political leaders in other countries remain wary of associating with the artist.
The Albania concert represents a high-stakes gamble for both sides. For West, it offers a chance to reconnect with fans amid controversy. For Albania, it is a bid to showcase itself as an emerging destination for global events.
