Kehlani’s R&B hit “Folded” has taken on new life through interpretations by an HBCU marching band and several well-known vocalists. The ripple effect marks a moment of crossover between viral music trends and long-standing musical traditions.

Viral HBCU Tribute

At a recent Jackson State University football game, the Sonic Boom of the South marching band delivered a spirited halftime rendition of “Folded.” Their performance reimagined Kehlani’s original as a full-band arrangement, complete with brass, percussion and choreographed formation.

Kehlani responded enthusiastically after seeing clips online, calling the tribute “incredible” and applauding the student musicians. The viral reaction has amplified visibility for both the song and the storied HBCU band tradition.

The Jackson State rendition has drawn praise for balancing the emotional core of “Folded” with the boldness and precision typical of HBCU halftime shows. In many ways, that fusion underscores how campus bands can translate current hits into stadium power pieces.

Major Artists Join the Trend

Meanwhile, a growing list of established singers has released their own versions of “Folded.” Brandy, JoJo, Mario and Tank are among those participating in what is being called the “Folded challenge.”

On her 58th birthday, Toni Braxton joined in by sharing a silky, personalized cover online. Braxton captioned the release, “My birthday gift to you. When I sing ‘Folded’ — it’s UNFOLDED!” Kehlani’s reaction was immediate: “AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT.”

Earlier, Brandy had also offered her own take, sending emotional waves through fans and Kehlani alike. Kehlani noted how meaningful it was to have an influence she admires step into her work: “It’s one thing for the world to love what you made, and it’s another for your idols to reach back.”

To further the project’s scope, Kehlani has confirmed that Toni Braxton will join Brandy, JoJo and Mario as features on a forthcoming remix EP for “Folded.”

The dual wave—between collegiate band energy and veteran artist interpretation—speaks to “Folded’s” cultural resonance. The HBCU band version roots the track in collective, live performance, while artist covers emphasize vocal influence, reinterpretation and homage.

In the case of Jackson State, the performance ties the modern hit back to the legacy of Black college music programs. For the artists, their covers reflect both respect for Kehlani’s writing and an opportunity to stretch in new musical spaces.
