Keith Sweat sits down with Lenny Green to talk about his performance at the Apollo as part of the Rise UP Summer series and receiving the key to the city from Mayor Eric Adams.
“That’s a big thing for me, on 125th street where I was raised and born. Grant Projects. Two blocks away from the projects,” Sweat tells Green. “I get to do my thing on the street that I grew up on. Everybody claims New York—I am New York, 125th between Morningside and Amsterdam, Grant Projects. I am Harlem.
It came full circle because I used to walk down the street and see the marquee for The Apollo and see James Brown, Gladys Knight and I thought one day I’d get there and get the key to the city.”
The R&B legend also talks about his restaurant businesses, what it takes to make a hit, helping his children launch their respective careers, and more.
