Keke Palmer recently shared insights with Teen Vogue about her evolving career and considerations of retirement from Hollywood. The 30-year-old, who has worn multiple hats including game show and award show host, music artist, CEO, and most recently, a mother, opened up about the timer ticking on her Hollywood journey.
“I don’t know. I think the timer has started,” she told the outlet. “I think it’s because I just haven’t felt it yet. But the timer, I know that it’s around the corner. I don’t know when exactly, but it’s around the corner.”
Palmer discussed the impact she hopes to leave and the legacies she envisions for herself and those who follow her. “The main thing I want those legacies to be is [a call] to use your power for good, to use what you have to create spaces and systems for other people to thrive.”
Expressing her disdain for gatekeeping and emphasizing the importance of compassion, Palmer highlighted her commitment to raising her son without fear, encouraging him to embrace learning and unconditional self-love.
“I just don’t believe in holding everything. I don’t believe in gatekeeping. I’m not a coward,” she affirmed. “I think about my son. I don’t want to raise him to be afraid.”
While 2023 brought personal challenges, including a public breakup with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson, Palmer’s 2024 started on a high note as she made history at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Winning Outstanding Host for the game show Password, she became the first Black woman to sweep the category in 15 years.
Reflecting on her recent accomplishments, Palmer shared her initial feelings of success and pondered the next steps in her career. “I just felt like, ‘I’m successful. What more do I need?’” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m good. So now what?’”
Despite her achievements, Palmer’s definition of success has evolved beyond personal recognition to empowering the next generation of artists of color. As she continues to build her media empire, which includes the digital network KeyTV and the record label Big Bosses Entertainment, Palmer aims to create generational wealth within underserved communities.
“When you create generational wealth within underserved communities, you create wealth within our entire economy,” she stated, expressing her desire to teach others the skills she possesses for branding, entrepreneurship, and navigating systems.
Addressing personal hardships, Palmer detailed the legal proceedings against her estranged partner, Darius Jackson, citing instances of alleged abuse. Despite the challenges, she emphasized her commitment to focusing on positive and uplifting aspects of life.
“I put focus on things that I see can give power to others,” Palmer explained. “I just care most about continuing to put focus on the things that I know are going to be positive and uplifting to others.” As she contemplates the future, Palmer remains dedicated to leaving a lasting impact through her work and the positive messages she shares.
