Keke Palmer has been making headlines as she recently was granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson. Now a source is revealing that this was a long time coming.
Last week, Palmer filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order against Jackson and awarded temporary sole physical and legal custody of their son, Leodis. In a conversation with PEOPLE, the source says Palmer “did what she had to do,” despite having worked “hard to have an amicable split.”
“She gave him a lot of chances to do the right thing,” they said. “Keke tried so hard to have an amicable split and arrangement [custody].”
“She needed to prioritize her safety and the safety of her baby,” the source continued. “She wants the best for Leo. She did not want it to get to this point. But she did what she had to do.”
In her request for full physical and legal custody of Leodis, she detailed multiple allegations of physical abuse.
“Darius trespassed into my home without my knowledge or consent,” she said in a declaration attached to the filing. “[He] threatened me, then physically attacked me — lunging for my neck, striking me, throwing me over the couch, and stealing my phone when I told him I was going to call the police.”
The filing alleged that there were “many instances of physical violence, including striking and grabbing me around the neck, descriptions of Darius destroying my personal property, including diaries and prescription eyeglasses, throwing my belongings into the street, throwing my car keys to prevent me from driving away, hitting me in front of our son, spewing profanities about me to our son, threatening to kill himself with a gun if I left him, harassment, and other physical and emotional abuse.”
