Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime performance on February 9 in New Orleans has sparked controversy, leading to 125 complaints filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The show, which attracted a record-breaking 133.5 million viewers, featured several elements that drew public criticism.

Controversial Elements of the Kendrick Lamar Performance

A significant portion of the complaints centered around Lamar’s performance of “Not Like Us,” a diss track aimed at fellow rapper Drake. Although Lamar omitted the most contentious lyrics during the live show, viewers expressed concerns over the song’s inclusion. Additionally, the presence of tennis legend Serena Williams, who made a brief cameo and performed a dance move associated with gang culture, led to accusations of promoting gang affiliation.

Some viewers also took issue with perceived anti-American themes in the performance. Complaints highlighted the use of a split American flag visual and the predominance of Black performers, which some interpreted as divisive.

Comparison to Previous Halftime Shows

Despite the 125 complaints, Lamar’s performance received fewer grievances than some previous halftime shows. For instance, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s 2020 performance garnered over 1,300 complaints, while Rihanna’s 2024 show received just over 100.

In response to the backlash, the NFL is reportedly in discussions with Taylor Swift to headline the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show. The organization aims to select a universally loved performer to appeal to a broad audience and mitigate future controversies.

Despite the complaints, Lamar’s halftime show achieved historic viewership numbers, underscoring the complex interplay between artistic expression and audience reception on a national stage.
