Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha made history as a married couple.
Notoriously private about their relationship, the couple gave their first joint interview after 13 years of marriage.
At the 57th NAACP Image Awards, Washington was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for Shadow Force. Asomugha was up for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for The Knife.
“No matter what happens tonight, we get to go home winners,” Kerry told Entertainment Tonight.
“It’s date night, we’ll have a good time,” Asomugha added.
He also did not have a speech prepared if he won.
“Absolutely not,” Nnamdi said. “No, this is one of those ‘happy to be here’ type of moments.”
Washington expressed her gratitude to be included among so many great nominees and participants.
“It’s so special to be in a room full of people who are…running towards excellence and Black excellence, in particular,” Washington said.
“And for us it’s fun to hang out with each other and just see other people that we love,” she added. “You know, other friends who have done work that we want to celebrate and be proud of.”
THE COUPLE IS EXTREMELY PRIVATE ABOUT THEIR FAMILY
The couple shares children Isabelle, 11, and Caleb, 9. They also share Nnamdi’s teenage daughter from a previous relationship. Washington spoke about how they have maintained their privacy as celebrities.
“It was very hard at the beginning,” Kerry told InStyle in September. “I’d look at a picture of my kid and send it to my mother: ‘This picture has to be in the world, but I don’t want to post it!’ When [my kids] started going to school and I knew I couldn’t protect them every moment of the day, it was scary.”
“Our kids get to be who they are, not who the world has decided they are,” Washington explained.
We live our lives, and we are in the public eye, but we are still fairly private. Almost two years ago, we were at a couture show in Italy, and the house crew took a picture of us. I said to him, ‘This picture is so beautiful. I want to post this picture.’ And he was like, “Really?”
She added, “We had been married 10 years and never posted a picture of ourselves together. We are both the kind of actors who are often trying to tell as much truth as possible behind the mask of the character. I feel like we are more protective of our real truth. That’s not for public consumption.”
