Veteran NBA star Kevin Durant openly discussed why he currently has no plans to get married, offering rare insight into his relationship philosophy. In a recent podcast appearance, Durant acknowledged that while he is “open-minded,” wedlock is not something he’s actively expecting.

During an episode of Not This Again with host Bobbi Althoff, Durant said: “I think divorce is actually more of a realistic… ’cause I mean, the percent is higher.” He added, “I don’t know if I want to take those odds.”

When asked whether he envisions being with one person every day, Durant responded: “Do I want to be with this somebody every day? Hang with the same person every day?” He clarified: “It’s just like the word ‘marriage’…. what that relationship is like.”

On the topic of a wedding ceremony, he admitted: “I never really dreamt of having a wedding day.” He added: “It was never really when I go to weddings… ‘Oh, this is cool.’ But it’s not like it needs to happen in my mind.”

Prioritizing Freedom Over Labels

Durant said he isn’t looking for a traditional relationship right now. “I’m not actually looking for anything,” he told Althoff. He also described the kind of connection he would consider: “Just somebody I can hang out with every day… somebody I can really be friends with, and not look at it as if, like, ‘You’re my girlfriend,’ ‘I’m your boyfriend.’ Like that expectation, that title… instead of just us being natural friends.”

His underlying preference? “No expectations is a little better for me, ’cause sometimes I might not want to talk to you or see you.”

He said he had previously lived with a partner but concluded: “Living together that’s a big commitment… like really combining your life with somebody on the day to day is crazy.”

Durant, 37, says his upbringing shaped his viewpoint. Raised by his mother after his father left when he was an infant, Durant has spoken previously of how that experience informs his values.

In past comments he has also noted his introspective personality and how it influences his relationship status. He’s described himself as a “massive overthinker,” someone who “cares too deeply,” with “so much energy” and “needing reassurance all the time.”

He was once engaged to former WNBA star Monica Wright in 2013, but the relationship ended.

Despite his reluctance toward marriage, Durant emphasized he is not entirely closing the door. “I’m open-minded,” he said. “I’m sure that may happen… I’m not closing the door or nothing — but I’m not expecting it.”
