Kid Cudi said he “hated every minute” of testifying against Sean “Diddy” Combs in the federal criminal trial earlier this year. Still, the Grammy-winning rapper took the stand to support his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.
Scott Mescudi, better known as Kid Cudi, revealed on the Call Her Daddy podcast that he twice refused to testify. “At first they asked, I said no. They asked again, I said no,” he said. “Then I got subpoenaed, and I was like, ‘F**k, S**t. No.’”
He described walking into the Manhattan courthouse on May 22 in casual attire. “I had to decide what I was wearing. I thought, ‘I’m not dressing up for this shit.’ I’m in Levi’s and a leather jacket,” Cudi said.
On the stand, Cudi recounted a tense moment from December 2011, when Combs allegedly broke into his Hollywood Hills home. He later testified about a firebombing that destroyed his Porsche in early 2012.
But amid the ordeal, Cudi found peace. “I hated every minute of it. I did not want to do it,” he said. “But I thought, ‘I’m here to support Cassie.’”
He spoke warmly of Ventura’s progress. “Cassie is my friend and I love her. I want to see her do well,” he said. “When I saw her get married, I was so happy she found her person. When I saw she was having kids, I was like, ‘Oh, this is so awesome.’ I know she was living a nightmare.”
Kid Cudi Facing Down Fear And Regret
In a separate interview on CBS Mornings, Cudi described being near Combs in court as “weird.” “We made eye contact a couple times,” he said. “I know I did the right thing, so that’s all that matters.”
One prominent voice criticized his decision. Kanye West (Ye) posted that he “wished Cudi hadn’t testified against Puff.”
Still, Cudi expressed no regret. “I was willing to walk into the fire,” he said.
In July, a federal jury convicted Combs on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of sex-trafficking and racketeering charges. He now faces sentencing in October.
