Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner are seeking $7 million from Ray J in an escalating legal dispute tied to a long-running controversy over a 2007 sex tape.
Newly revealed legal documents outline the demand, which stems from an alleged breach of a 2023 confidential settlement agreement between the parties. According to reports, the agreement included a non-disclosure clause prohibiting public discussion of the tape and related claims.
Dispute centers on confidentiality agreement
The dispute traces back to a deal in which Kardashian and Jenner agreed to pay Ray J, whose legal name is William Ray Norwood Jr., $6 million in installments. The payments were reportedly structured over several years, with a final installment expected in 2026.
However, attorneys for Kardashian and Jenner allege that Ray J violated the agreement by making public statements about the case. These statements included claims during a livestream that the pair were involved in a federal investigation. The allegations were strongly denied by Kardashian and Jenner.
In a legal letter sent in 2025, their attorneys demanded that Ray J return $5 million already paid. They also sought an additional $2 million in penalties. That figure includes $1 million each in damages for the alleged violations.
“My clients take this matter very seriously,” the letter stated, warning that legal action would follow if the demands were not met.
Legal battle expands with lawsuits and countersuits
The conflict has since grown into a broader legal fight. Kardashian and Jenner filed a defamation lawsuit in October 2025, arguing that Ray J made false and damaging claims about them.
Ray J responded with a countersuit the following month. He accused Kardashian and Jenner of violating the same agreement by referencing the sex tape in public settings, including their reality television series.
The case has also drawn renewed attention to the origins of the tape, which first surfaced in 2007 and played a major role in Kardashian’s rise to fame. Over the years, differing accounts have emerged regarding how the tape became public.
A recent court decision denied efforts by Kardashian and Jenner to keep settlement details sealed, allowing more information about the agreement to become public.
