Kris Boyd, the 29-year-old cornerback for the New York Jets, has been readmitted to the hospital more than a week after being shot in Midtown Manhattan. The readmission came after what he described on social media as “health issues.”
Health Scare Continues
Boyd was initially treated at a New York City hospital after he was shot in the abdomen early Nov. 16. Police said the bullet traveled into his lung and lodged in his pulmonary artery. He underwent multiple surgeries and appeared to be on the mend. On Nov. 19, he posted a photo from his hospital bed with the caption: “God is real, God is powerful! … I’m coming along, starting to breathe on my own now. Sincerely appreciate everyone!”
Teammates and coaches expressed relief. Jets coach Aaron Glenn said Boyd’s spirit lifted him: “he’s in good spirits.”
But on Wednesday night, Boyd posted again — this time revealing he had returned to hospital. “Please bare [sic] with me, I haven’t been in communication much,” he wrote. “I was released but had to return to the hospital due to my health issues.” He added gratitude to those who reached out. “I love and appreciate everyone of y’all dearly who has prayed/reached out even if I can’t get back to you!”
As of now, it remains unclear exactly what complications prompted the readmission. A Jets spokesperson offered no further medical details.
Incident Under Investigation
The shooting took place outside the Manhattan restaurant Sei Less just after 2 a.m. on Nov. 16. Police said Boyd had been with two Jets teammates and another friend when a confrontation erupted with a group that had been “chirping” about their clothes. Moments later, gunfire erupted.
Authorities believe the attack may have stemmed from a failed necklace theft, though it is unclear whether Boyd was the intended target. Surveillance video captured a suspect fleeing the scene in a vehicle, but no arrests have been made.
Investigators continue to appeal to the public for help identifying the shooter. The case remains open as detectives sift through evidence and witness accounts.
Among the worried supporters are teammates, fans and family — including Boyd’s wife and young child. Glenn said when he first spoke to Boyd, “the first thing I thought about was he just had a kid.”
Yet the journey ahead remains uncertain. In his most recent message, Boyd ended on a note of faith: “Head HIGH, God is not through with me yet!”
