Five-time Grammy-winning artist Lalah Hathaway has been hitting the road in promotion of her new album, VANTABLACK.
On June 19, Hathaway delivered a special performance of “So In Love” on The Kelly Clarkson Show. However, the songwriter didn’t appear in the New York City studio. Instead she sent in a recorded performance in the style of a music video.
Since its June 14 release, VANTABLACK has received positive acclaim. The 16-track offering includes the singles “So In Love,” “Mood For You” featuring MC Lyte and “I AM.”
Hathaway uses the phrase “melting pot” in describing the mix of tempos and creative experimentation that frames her new album and its title track. “VANTABLACK … the word itself has so much weight on it,” notes Hathaway in a release announcing the album and tour.
“What I thought were conflicting perspectives actually began to shape the concept of not only this album but also how I saw myself. I started reframing how I saw color – in terms of being the Blackest I’ve ever been. And even though I’m steeped in who I am, it doesn’t exclude the other things that make up the sum of me. Similar to how all the music around me informs the Black music that I create.”
Hathaway is kicking off her ‘Vantablack’ tour on Saturday, August 24 in Birmingham, Alabama, at BJCC Concert Hall. The tour will cover a total of 18 cities, finally ending on September 28 at Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, South Carolina.
