NBA icon LeBron James has lent his voice to diplomacy in a unique way, calling basketball “not only a sport, but also a bridge that connects us.” In a rare op-ed published Monday in China’s People’s Daily, James presented the game as a tool for unity between the United States and China, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
LeBron James Pens Essay
James’s essay arrives during his 15th professional visit to China and supports efforts to heal fractured ties that began in 2019, when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted support for Hong Kong protesters. The aftermath saw NBA broadcasts vanish from China for nearly two years and led to significant revenue loss.
Publishing the essay in People’s Daily—a major mouthpiece for the Chinese government—signals more than personal outreach. It reflects how both sides may be willing to deploy cultural and sporting icons to ease diplomatic strains.
In his essay, James conveyed gratitude for Chinese fans and spoke of his desire to support the development of basketball in China. He wrote, “The enthusiasm and kindness of Chinese friends deeply touch me, and all I can do is give my all in every game to express my gratitude.”
He also reflected on generational bonds: “I also have three children and I know that basketball can inspire generations of people to pursue their dreams. Seeing so many young basketball lovers in China, I hope I can also contribute to the development of Chinese basketball.”
NBA’s Return to Greater China
The timing of the essay coincides with upcoming NBA pre-season games scheduled for October 10 and 12 in Macau, featuring the Phoenix Suns versus the Brooklyn Nets. These games mark the league’s first return to Chinese soil since the fallout in 2019.
This, along with renewed broadcasts and partnerships, suggests the NBA is on the brink of a full revival in one of its most critical markets.
