LeBron James Making History
LeBron James, known as “LeCaptain America” by fans, was chosen through a vote by fellow Olympians. The announcement was made in a viral video featuring Stephen Curry. In the video, Curry informs his teammates, and James is seen proudly accepting the honor while teammates like Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, and Bam Adebayo cheer him on.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations.”
James’ selection as flag bearer is particularly symbolic as he prepares for his fourth Olympics. He has previously won gold medals in 2008 (Beijing) and 2012 (London), and a bronze in 2004 (Athens). U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland praised James’ selection.
“Being selected by your teammates to carry the flag is a tremendous honor – and a testament to LeBron’s passion for Team USA and his dedication to his sport,” Hirshland stated. “We will watch with great pride as the flag bearers lead our athletes who are about to embark on a remarkable journey together.”
James and Team USA are currently in London, preparing for their final exhibition game against Germany. This game will be streamed live on Fox and Fubo on Monday, July 22, at 3 PM EST. The 2024 Paris Olympics will kick off on Friday, July 26. It will start with the men’s basketball team starting against Serbia on July 28, at 11:15 AM EST.
