Lionel Richie was in the ICU for a cardiac test and is expected to fly home Wednesday, Sept. 2, TMZ reports.
Shortly after his Saturday, Aug. 29 show at The Muny in St. Louis, Richie checked into the ICU as a safety measure. Earlier in the night, he had asked his team for a chair to sit in while performing his final song, “All Night Long.” During the show’s finale, audience members noted that Richie appeared to be struggling,
Richie has faced multiple health scares while on his 2026 tour, raising concerns among fans regarding the physically demanding nature of his live performances. The first major incident occurred on June 24 during a stop in St. Paul, Minnesota, when the 77-year-old singer suddenly began feeling unwell mid-set.
Addressing the crowd directly, Richie admitted to feeling “dizzy” and “strange” before taking a seat on stage.
Richie said, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down,” The Minnesota Star Tribune reported
“This is the first time in my life I’ve sung ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ sitting down,” he continued” It’s a bad sign.”
Ultimately ending the show early. Following medical advice, he postponed two subsequent tour stops to recover before making his return to the stage.
On June 30, Richie returned to the stage and spoke about his health.
“Had you worried there for a minute, huh?” Richie joked with the crowd, according to TribLive.
“You have no idea what I have been through in the last 24 hours, listening to my friends tell me their advice on what I should be doing,” he added.
In an Instagram post on July 4, Richie told his fans that he was improving.
“Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. ❤️ I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you,” he wrote. “Pittsburgh and Detroit were an absolute joy. The energy, the dancing, the faces in the crowd… we made real memories together. See you in Toronto… let’s party all night long!
