Despite her vibrant personality and global popularity, Lizzo says fame has created distance in her personal life — especially with friends. In a recent interview with comedian Ziwe, the Grammy-winning artist opened up about the emotional toll fame has taken on her inner circle.
“I don’t have any friends,” Lizzo said, letting out a nervous laugh. “I used to have so many friends, but when you get famous, it gets really weird. Everyone makes it weird for famous people. I’m still a normal person.”
The singer, known for empowering hits like “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time,” expressed that while she hasn’t changed as a person, the world around her has shifted dramatically. “You’re still you. Everything around you changes. That’s fame in a nutshell — and people change, too. It’s heartbreaking,” she explained.
An “Anti-Fame PSA”
Lizzo took her reflections a step further by issuing a tongue-in-cheek warning to aspiring celebrities. “Don’t be famous,” she said, looking directly into the camera. “I know you guys want to be, and I know you want to go online, go viral, get your money, and be rich. Don’t be famous. Rich and famous are not the same thing.”
She emphasized that being famous is not always glamorous. “If you’re an artist, do your art. But just being famous? You can’t leave. It never ends,” she said.
While Lizzo admits to having very few close friends, she did confirm that all of them are Black, and some are plus-size. “All my friends are Black,” she told Ziwe. “I have thick Black friends… I’m thinking of two right now.”
One of those friends is fellow artist SZA. Their bond, Lizzo says, has remained strong despite the pressures of fame. “We’ve just always been friends, and it’s a sacred space for me in this industry,” she shared with Billboard.
Though the two once considered forming a rock band named “Pu**y Lasers,” the collaboration instead led to the creation of “F2F,” featured on SZA’s chart-topping album, SOS.
