Tyler Perry’s latest movie has gotten mixed reviews from fans and critics, and now Loni Love is offering some advice to the Atlanta entertainment mogul.
Love’s comments came after Perry’s latest project, “Divorce In The Black,” received a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
She expressed her views on X, stating, “I love that Tyler is paying Black actors now I wish he would hire Black writers and directors that have experience to help him with his movies…”
She added, “He could improve the movies & make them award worthy if he would stop trying to save money by doing the writing and directing himself.”
Perry has been under scrutiny for predominantly handling writing and directing duties alone in his projects, which include TV shows like “Sistas” and recent films such as “Divorce In The Black” and “Mea Culpa.” Despite previously indicating a shift towards involving more writers, his solo efforts have received mixed reviews.
“Mea Culpa,” for instance, garnered only a 17% critic score and a 37% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting potential challenges with Perry’s current creative approach.
“Nobody writes any of my work. I write it all.”
In 2021, fans of the Hollywood mogul begged him to hire a team of experienced Black writers and directors after Perry admitted that doesn’t have a writer’s room and writes all of his show’s scripts himself. Perry responded to the criticism and announced plans to bring changes to his studio in Atlanta by hiring a team of writers.
“So, I don’t know if you know this, but all shows on television have a writers room,” Perry said in a video shared to Instagram at the time. “And, most of the time, there are 10 people or 12 or whatever that write on these television shows. Well, I have no writers room. Nobody writes any of my work. I write it all. Why am I telling you this? I wrote all of these scripts by myself in 2019. Work ethic!”
In an interview with men’s magazine Level, he recalled the challenges he faced hiring Black writers early in his career and how this led to his “NO WRITERS ROOM” policy.
