On Saturday, February 28, the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles will be forever etched into history as it is officially renamed Nipsey Hussle Square.
The ceremony, scheduled for 10am PST, will mark the official unveiling of the signage, commemorating the rapper’s influence, entrepreneurial spirit and deep connection to the community.
The plaza holds deep significance as it is the location for Hussle’s famed Marathon clothing store and is where Hussle took his last breath in 2019.
The 33-year-old artist, born Ermias Asghedom, was in the parking lot of The Marathon clothing store when Eric Holder Jr. shot Nip 10 times and kicked him in the head. Holder was found guilty of murder in 2022 and sentenced to 60 years in prison.
The plaza remains family-owned and serves as the home of the Neighborhood Nip Foundation.
Guests will include Blacc Sam, Nipsey Hussle’s brother and CEO of The Marathon brand, and Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, councilmember Heather Hutt and California State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan.
Hussle, nicknamed ‘Nayborhood Nip,’ was a hip hop artist, philanthropist and agent for change. A former gang member himself, Hussle persistently denounced gun violence through his music, influence, and community work. He funded improvements to neighborhood schools and started a co-working space for the underserved youth in Crenshaw.
The latest news follows the release of the first single from Nipsey’s long-awaited posthumous collaborative album with Bino Rideaux. The track, “Reckless,” produced by Mike & Keys, serves as the lead single for the upcoming album Prolific, which is expected to drop this summer.
