Lupita Nyong’o gave an out-of-body appearance at the Tony Awards 2023.
On Sunday (June 11), Nyong’o graced the red carpet in a metallic breastplate. The breastplate was casted and molded for the actress by Pakistani artist, Misha Japanwala.
According to Nyong’o, the eye-catching custom piece is a symbol of being allowed to exist freely in one’s bodies. The Black Panther actress paired the top with a tailored black blazer and high-waisted trousers with a flared hem.
Nyong’o posted a series of photos on her Instagram adorning the unique top.
“Misha Japanwala is a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, whose work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body.” Nyong’o added, “In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies.”
The 40-year old topped of the look with a henna tattoo on her newly shaved head.
Nyong’o went on to praise Japanwala for helping her practice self-love. “Misha, thank you for this special opportunity to BE EXACTLY HERE, IN THIS BODY NOW.”
