The second annual Caribbean Music Awards (CMA) returned to Brooklyn, on Thursday, August 29th.
The award show was held in the heart of Flatbush, Brooklyn at Kings Theater and hosted by the Queen of Dancehall Spice and the King of Caribbean Comedy Majah Hype. It featured performances by Nailah Blackman, Tosh Alexander, Alaine, Dexta Daps, Lyrikal, Wendi, Skinny Fabulous, Morgan Heritage, and many more.
With the CMAs being in Flatbush Brooklyn, many of the attendees said it felt like home for them. Singer Serani revealed that that neighborhood is where his career started. “After Jamaica gave me that first push, I came straight here, so I’m at home,” he said.
There were also appearances from Shaggy, Spragga Benz, Govana, Dj Cassidy, Melyssa Ford, Patrice Roberts, Baby Cham, Problem Child, and other Caribbean heavy hitters. Throughout the show, CMAs honored some legendary artists as well. Marcia Griffiths received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Alison Hinds, known as the Queen of Soca, was awarded the Elite Icon Award, and Cedella Marley, the daughter of the late Bob Marley was honored with the Legacy Award.
While giving her speech, Griffiths, best known for her song, “Electric Boogie,” talked about her 60-year career and achievements. “When I first walked on stage nobody could’ve told me that 60 years later, I’d be standing on stage accepting this award.”
There were also surprises throughout the night as well. Spice was honored with the Artist of the Decade Award as she celebrates 25 years in the music industry. During her acceptance speech, she thanked her fans better known as her besties for believing in her.
The Caribbean Music Awards seems to be the unofficial kickoff to Labor Day Weekend. Stay tuned for updates as WBLS will be at the Labor Day Parade on Monday, Sept. 2nd.
