After an epic win at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards, director and screenwriter Malcolm D. Lee spoke on what he has in store next after the success of The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
“I’m trying to get a little bit of rest,” Lee said. “And then get in the woodshed as my father would say, and gear up for the next couple of years so I can set myself up for more success.”
Lee’s series The Best Man: The Final Chapters won the NAACP award for Outstanding Television Movie, Limited Series, or Dramatic Special. That wasn’t the only big win for the franchise. Both Morris Chestnut and Nia Long won awards for Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Supporting Actress respectively.
Lee recently spoke about how the conclusion to the cult classic was bittersweet but also stated that he has been grateful to finish what he started in 1999 with the first installment, The Best Man.
“It feels fantastic. It feels beautiful. I came in this business trying to represent us in an authentic and robust way, and thus far, I’ve been able to do that and I’ve been able to work with some great collaborators. I’ve been blessed to work with the right studios and networks. So yeah, it feels fantastic.”
