A security breach at NBC’s TODAY show studio disrupted operations Thursday morning after a man reportedly entered a restricted area inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza while searching for longtime weather anchor Al Roker. Authorities said the man instead encountered co-host Craig Melvin, where he allegedly shouted racial slurs before being detained.
The incident unfolded shortly before the program’s 9 a.m. hour. According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to reports of a disorderly person inside the building around 9:19 a.m. The individual was taken into custody, and no injuries were reported. An investigation remains ongoing.
Law enforcement sources said the man had been asking for Roker after slipping past security checkpoints inside the building. When he did not locate the veteran broadcaster, he reportedly confronted Melvin in a restricted backstage area. Several reports stated the suspect lunged toward the anchor while directing racist language at him before security intervened.
Despite the frightening encounter, the disruption never reached viewers watching from home.
Melvin, Roker and the rest of the TODAY team returned to the live broadcast shortly afterward. The incident was not discussed on air, and the program continued as scheduled.
Questions Raised About Studio Security
The breach has renewed questions about security inside one of television’s most recognizable morning news studios.
Studio 1A sits inside Rockefeller Center, where large crowds regularly gather outside the show’s famous plaza windows. While public access is part of the program’s identity, backstage production areas remain restricted to authorized personnel.
Reports indicated the suspect was able to move beyond public spaces before reaching internal areas near dressing rooms and production offices. That prompted concerns about how the individual bypassed multiple layers of security before encountering on-air talent.
NBC has not publicly detailed how the man entered the restricted area. The company has reportedly been reviewing security procedures alongside law enforcement following the incident.
Police have not announced potential charges or publicly identified the suspect.
Broadcast Continues Without Injuries
Although the confrontation occurred moments before airtime, no physical injuries were reported.
The alleged attack also came as Melvin continues serving as co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie after assuming the role in early 2025. Roker has remained one of the program’s most recognizable personalities for decades, making his presence synonymous with the morning broadcast.
The incident unfolded on the same day Guthrie announced she would temporarily step away from the program to film a television game show. Multiple outlets emphasized that Melvin’s previously scheduled upcoming absence from TODAY is unrelated to Thursday’s security scare.
For viewers, the morning appeared largely uninterrupted.
Authorities continue investigating how the suspect gained access to restricted areas and whether additional security measures will be implemented going forward.
