Martha Stewart has revealed a shocking secret about her past in her upcoming Netflix documentary, Martha, which premieres October 30. In the film, Stewart admits to cheating on her ex-husband, Andrew “Andy” Stewart, during their marriage. This confession comes more than three decades after their divorce in 1990.
In the trailer for the documentary, Stewart shares blunt advice for women in troubled marriages. “Young women, listen to my advice,” she begins. “If you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s—. Get out of that marriage.” But when asked by a producer if she had an affair early in her marriage, Stewart doesn’t hesitate to respond. “Yeah,” she admits, “but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that.”
A Painful Divorce for Martha Stewart
Martha and Andy married in 1961 and had a daughter, Alexis, in 1965. Despite nearly three decades together, they ultimately divorced in 1990. Stewart has since spoken openly about the emotional toll the divorce took on her. “Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me,” she said in a 2020 interview. “We were the first to divorce in my family, and that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful.”
After the split, Andy went on to marry Martha’s former assistant, Robyn Fairclough, though they eventually divorced as well. He later married his current wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart.
The documentary follows Stewart’s journey from a teenage model to a billionaire businesswoman and television icon. It also touches on her infamous time in federal prison in 2004, where she served five months after being convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice related to stock sales. In the trailer, Stewart reflects on her prison experience, saying, “I was a trophy for these idiots… Those prosecutors should have been put in a Cuisinart and turned on high.”
Martha will be available for streaming on Netflix starting October 30.
