Meli’sa Morgan is getting her gold.
Thirty-seven years after she released her debut album, Do Me Baby, Morgan finally has her gold. The album has sold over 500,000 copies according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
During its release, Do Me Baby was considered a late 80s classic but the album sales never seemed to match at the time. Morgan explained in her caption post that she had to fight for years for accurate tracking of the sales. With the help of Capitol Records, Universal Music and the RIAA, she finally received an answer.
“OMG…. AFTER OVER 35 YEARS….. I FINALLY EARNED A CERTIFIED GOLD ALBUM FOR MY FIRST ALBUM ‘DO ME BABY’ BY THE RIAA TODAY!!!” Morgan wrote. “I am in Tears!!!! Thank you God, and Thank you to The RIAA for helping me and CAPITOL/UNIVERSAL for not giving up and Believing me when I said, ‘I Know my First Album is at least Gold if not PLATINUM!!!!’”
While she was happy to be rewarded for her hard work, Morgan also wanted to use the experience as a lesson she can share with other artists.
“I just think it is important to let other artists know to go after and not give up pursing the sales number data for their albums and singles! Especially if they are like me and did not get certified Gold or Platinum during the height of their success.”
She continued, “Records keep selling throughout the years! You should stay on top of that cause that is your source of status that you use for your level of success. Especially in the music business.”
Morgan released her debut solo studio album Do Me Baby in 1986 and the album reached #4 on the US R&B chart and #41 on the Billboard 200 chart. She went on to release the albums Good Love in 1987, The Lady in Me in 1990, Still in Love with You in 1992, and I Remember in 2005.
Morgan’s single “Do Me Baby” reached #1 on the US R&B chart and #46 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She also had success with the singles “Do You Still Love Me?”, “If You Can Do It: I Can Too!!”, “Love Changes”, and “Still in Love with You”.
